A Bloggers Day Out

Temple Grounds
(Temple grounds by C Morley)

This morning, after checking emails over a pot of tea, I turned off my computer, tucked it into the towel closet, then took off with friends. Two expat females, our Thai teacher, our Thai driver and me. So really, it’s like this. Bloggers have jobs. Bloggers blog. Bloggers also have time outs, and this was mine. [... Continue reading ... Blogging excellence and my eight random things

I Love Thailand
(Southern Thailand by C Morley)

This has been a crazy busy month what with security fears, work, work and more work. Nothing new or unusual on the work end. And, as usual, I’m behind.

At the first of the month, Steve Tiano tagged DWB as one of his top ten excellent reads with the Excellent Blogger Award going around. Thanks Steve! Steve’s blog on book design is at the top of my excellent reads too. Well written, well researched, all good. [... Continue reading ... Blogging excellence and my eight random things

How creative is YOUR mind?

The Dark

How far does your creative imagination take you? Far enough? Too far?

Me? My creative mind doesn’t over-freak. It doesn’t invent ghosts or goblins. Or monsters under my bed. Or even bogymen in the dark.

Or didn’t. Until last night. [... Continue reading ... How creative is YOUR mind?

Ramble: Do You Pretend?

Are you a designer? Working at home?

I am. And I do.

And for the most part I feel safe.
Double locks brought from the UK on the front door.
Keys that can’t be copied and all.
Security compound with 24/7 guards.
Guards who insist on walking the Pizza delivery boy on and up.

Then today I had a pest control chap come by. [... Continue reading ... Ramble: Do You Pretend?

Ramble: Degrees of PITA

Are you … a designer working with a programmer?

I am. And I do. And her name is Jay.

Jay is a magic maker. I know that. When I come up with suggested code tweaking, she makes it so. Even when she’s just spent two days bed-bound.

Problem is, I don’t know enough about programming to give her appropriate approbation (it all seems amazing to me).

Backing up … I’m a project manager. It’s what I do.

(Well, Jay might call it something different)

Being a project manager, I’m constantly thinking of ways to improve our working process.

So, today I created a ‘Degrees of PITA’ for Jay to choose from. You know, for when she sends finished bits back over and all?

  1. Simple to fix so a medium wai over bent head will do
  2. Took a bit of thinking and research so a high wai with bent waist is in order
  3. Pain in the butt so forget the dmn wai’s, I want straight out groveling!
  4. Grrrr! I’m going to wring your neck if you ask for this one again!!
  5. &%@!!! I WANT CHOCOLATE NOW NOW NOW!!!!

On the last snafu she fixed – the one that gave me this idea, you know, where she’s supposed to be recovering but instead she’s fixing my bits? – she replied “I’ll take a number two with chocolate thank you very much!”

Luckily, she’s still working her way through the box I sent last week ;-D

Note: A Thai ‘wai’ is pronounced ‘why’, not ‘waa’.

Falling Down on Filling Up. Time.

Two steps forward. Two steps back.

After a blissful time managed week last week, this week has become disjointed. And it’s only Tuesday already.

Monday morning was spent emptying my email buckets and continuing research for a new project. Research meant more emails in and out. More emails in my buckets. But, as I do similar to what Mark advises (a mini-review every morning), I’m sort of confident of keeping mostly on top of email buckets (how’s that for a positive maybe?). [... Continue reading ... The Bliss of No Distractions. Time.

Do you have ‘what if’s?

What if you could dedicate fully 100 percent of your attention to whatever was at hand, at your own choosing, with no distraction?

This past week I’ve continued smothering myself in research for a megga article.

(You’ll love it)

[I hope you'll love it]

Face down after breakfast, I don’t surface until one or two.
After a quick feed, I saturate until night.

I’m loving it.

My to-dos are loving it.

My to-dos are loving being in buckets.
But not ignored.

Safe in buckets, they’re assured I’ll take a peek when I come up for air.

It’s bliss.
Bucket bliss.

I have ‘tomorrow’ buckets.
I have ‘next week’ buckets.
I have ‘dream on’ buckets.

I have a life.

But it still needs work.

As I now have friends and coworkers receiving a backlog of up to SIX EMAILS at time.

WHOOSH! What a RUSH.

For all of us.

My responses to Mark’s weekly questions:

What difference would it make to your life if you knew you would never forget another important commitment?

I rarely miss important commitments. I stress. I overwork. I rearrange deadlines. I do my best to never let anyone down.

You’d think the fourth would remove the second and third. Not always.

What would it be like if you could get your commitments off your mind and stay focused in the present?

My firsthand experience? It’s great. It’s a relief. It frees you up to go crazy with being creative.

It’s getting there as far as alleviating stress.

What difference would it make to know that you could review all your current commitments by looking in 5 or 6 convenient ‘buckets’?

I’m not at the heavy duty reviewing bits stage yet.

Some buckets have been created and put away for awhile. Gone. Nice.

Others. Well. Instead of reviewing, I’ve been dipping in when I need a break from being a wild woman.

What buckets do you / could you use to capture your commitments?

I’m trying out several.
(But it hasn’t been a priority. Yet)

Skoach
Skoach (ADHD-friendly life management software), is endowed with a mother-like personality. It’s great fun. They even come and get you if you ignore them for too long. Just like mom.

iGTD
iGTD seems a useful GTD tool. I upgraded my Mac just to try it out (yeah, I was the last person in the universe still on the old system). Then spent awhile inputting tasks.

But there’s a ton of stuff still to learn so I have a ways to go before I’m fully integrated in the way it works.

For instance, I haven’t connected macmail. So unlike Skoach, for now it leaves me alone.

xPad
Think TexEdit. Think stickies.
Think of all those lists you can jot down.
All stuck together.
On your Mac.

(Dear PC users. My apologies.
Please don’t throw rocks. I’m barely keeping up with Mac offers)
