ideasonideas: Blockbusting

ideasonideas
Eric at ideasonideas

Eric is writing a book. And like many of us, his book is still at the draft stage. Luckily for us, Eric is generous. And who knows, if you contribute ideas to Eric’s Blockbusting post at ideasonideas, you too could be in Eric’s book.

This passage is for when you find yourself stuck. At such a time, just open up to this chapter (again, it’s supposed to be part of a book), and try a random exercise. As you face more problems, you’ll likely uncover which approaches work best for you.

Eric ideasonideas Out of necessity (and a brain not caffeine-clicking yet) I’ve left a few out of my patter. But, no matter, here is the overall gist of what Eric is saying:

Mix up, break up, talk out, walk out, take out, throw out, take more, make more, look more, breath more, reorder, restart, back up and tidy up.

What I do when stuck is sit on the floor in my office with a spread of design books, magazines and artistic clippings around. They won’t have anything to do with the project (it’s better if they don’t). They just get my creativity flowing forward. Eventually it’ll flow back to the project at hand.

Another trick I use is to act like I’m giving advice to a friend. What would I suggest to do different? What would I argue against?

And you? How about you? What do you do when you get stuck?

23PSI. Law. Marketing. Tshirts. All.

Nick Mun
Nick Mun

Alert: I had difficulty keeping this post short because (besides Bangkok), KL is one of my favourite cities in all of SE Asia. Kuching is another, and both KL and Kuching are in Malaysia. A match.

Nick Mun of 23PSI is from KL. What’s a KL? Well, in SE Asia it’s common to shorten names. City or town names especially.

So KL is Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), KK is Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia), KB is Kuala Belait (Brunei) and BSB is Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei).

(Note: Some expats say Lumpa instead of Lumpur. In Thailand, it carries the same meaning when pronouncing Kwai as in the western movie, the Bridge over the River Kwai. Humorous to locals in both countries, I’m sure. And I’ll leave Nick to tell you the meaning of both). [... Continue reading ... 23PSI. Law. Marketing. Tshirts. All.

Truly Ace

Amanda
Amanda | Truly Ace

Amanda’s Truly Ace slipped through the cracks awhile back. First there was a download snafu in November (on my side). Then, when I next looked up it was April already. And now it’s the last day of April. Ouch. Apologies Amanda (it’s what happens when advanced age threatens to creep in).

As I skim through Amanda’s blog, I find myself nodding at what she has to say. For instance, she created a special page for advice at Becoming A Freelance Designer for the same very reasons we put together Creative Latitude, then Business of Design online. [... Continue reading ... Truly Ace

I like where Peter is going with Dracula Vs. Eisenstein: Graphic Design & Art History. It’s similar to Charley’s lines and colors, but leans more towards the graphic side.

And when I think about it, I haven’t found enough quality blogs headed that way. Have you? [... Continue reading ... Dracula Vs. Eisenstein

The Graphic & Web Design Blog is a working arm of a unique concept.

If you are a member here (here being the Graphic & Web Design Forum) then you can get your stuff featured there (there being the Graphic & Web Design Blog).

Slick. And impressive. And why hasn’t anyone else given this a thought? Well, that’s what I thought when I first came across Andi and his fine ideas. Pretty neat, I thought. [... Continue reading ... Graphic & Web Design Blog

Concept Design Workshop

Concept Design Workshop
Concept Design Workshop

The Concept Design Workshop is GREAT stuff for resource hunters: Workshops, tutorials, lectures, concept art, film, game, design projects. Megga.

Check out 100 Tutorials. Then on the same page, look at their long list of schools in the blogroll. Excellent.

I don’t have hours to spare (by the time this post goes live, I’ll be in the UK and heavy into a bout of recovery). But given the time, I honestly could spend hours and hours at the Concept Design Workshop.
