Amanda’s Truly Ace slipped through the cracks awhile back. First there was a download snafu in November (on my side). Then, when I next looked up it was April already. And now it’s the last day of April. Ouch. Apologies Amanda (it’s what happens when advanced age threatens to creep in).
As I skim through Amanda’s blog, I find myself nodding at what she has to say. For instance, she created a special page for advice at Becoming A Freelance Designer for the same very reasons we put together Creative Latitude, then Business of Design online.
I am very regularly asked for advice from people who want to become a freelance graphic designer and so have decided to compile my best advice in as sensible an order as I can manage so that I can direct those asking to this page.
Having a handy place on your site to educate is an excellent idea. I didn’t ask Amanda how she’s getting on with it, but I still find myself doing time via email. It’s time consuming, absolutely. But on the plus side, I can now type advice-giving emails in my sleep!
A girl after my own heart, Amanda also believes in donating to a good cause. When I Design For Free discusses no-spec.com and working pro bono. IMO, both admirable qualities in a designer.
And even Amanda’s about page has me smiling:
I will endeavour to be grammatically correct in my blogs, but I’m a busy lady more interested in design than going through my writing with a fine toothed comb for grammatical errors and typos – therefore I am not promising perfection!
Me too. So very me too. I’m about as grammatically correct as I can possibly be at this point. I started blogging to improve writing skills but my grammar is still sadly lacking. And truthfully, I’m tired of having to drag dusty grammar rules around when I’m on a writing roll.
And what about you? Why did you start blogging? Fame? Fortune? Energy release? Or just because it’s there?

Great to see Amanda featured here. She comments quite regularly on my blog, and I enjoy reading her thoughts.
As for my own blog beginnings, if I wasn’t self-employed, I’d probably never have started (which would’ve been a shame considering all the great contacts I’ve made).

Amanda has a good head on her shoulders, that’s for sure. And I’m glad she has a patient nature too :-)
Although I started blogging for real on DWB, it really all started with the LogoWorks saga (David, I believe I already told you this story).
Previously I pooh poohed blogging (friends would constantly badger me about coming on board).
Then one minute I was trying out blogger for a client (they wanted me to set it up then train them) and the next I was swept up in the blogging moment along with Von, Steve, Robert and the rest of the bunch.
Whooosh. I was hooked. It was then I knew that if I was going to blog, I’d better learn how to write (finally). Because although I could always get writers on Latitude, it doesn’t work on personal blogs. No. Not at all.
(or at least I haven’t found that it’s so)
her blog is really nice!!
Hey, I only just spotted this, thanks for the lovely write up Cat, and also thank you for the lovely comments!
:)

Hi Amanda, I know I should have emailed. But, as I was at fault for the snafu, I ducked (I’m bad, apologies again)
