Earlier this month, along with hundreds of blogs, DWB went Pink for October. This morning Liz sent over the Breast Cancer Public Service Announcement which mentions the M&M’s pink campaign. While preparing for this post, I went to the Pink for October blog and came across the Gag Me With a Pink Ribbon post.

I’m not in the west. I’m not bombarded with ‘all that is pink’ each year. Sure, I can understand why people would object to commercial companies jumping on the pink wagon. But … I can’t help but see the positive angle. How a company changing its colours to pink would help spread the word.

If a company wanted to donate to the cause it would be a matter of writing a check and sending it off. Finish. By using their products to promote the cause, it increases the time the support would be in the public eye. The cause is happy. The stock holders are happy. Makes sense to me. But then, I don’t have to live around all that pink. It’s bad enough listening to Xmas carols in October …

Are companies gaining from selling pink versions of their products? Coming up with pink M&M’s costs money. Not a ton, but everything that goes with it does cost (advertising, marketing, etc). As does changing soup cans, etc to pink. Then there are the promised donations. On the other hand there are tax cuts as well as company kudos.

What AM I worried about instead? Over saturation. All this pink going out on store shelves everywhere. Helping to spread the word about National Cancer Awareness Month is a good thing, BUT turning the world pink for a month could become gagging even to those who like the colour. (Btw – I’m not a fan of pink, but a pink DWB is strangely growing on me).

But like I said, changing products to pink for the National Cancer Awareness Month has not hit out here in a big way. Or any way for that I’ve noticed. Who would? Thailand is pink everywhere you look – pink taxis, pink shops, pink dishes, pink restaurants … so much so that I don’t notice it anymore.

I do have one question for all you Americans and others out there. Pink soup, like green beer, is not appetizing to me in any way … so … HOW?
