Jeffery Zeldman Presents: The Daily Report
There is no doubt about it, people listen to the leaders in their community. Those they look to with respect. Jeffery Zeldman is such a man, and it’s his opinions on spec within our industry I’m featuring today. Just snippets, you can get the whole article on his site.
Please note: this article was not written in support of the NO!SPEC crusade. Jeffery wrote it in January, 2004. (And no, I do not have a close association with Jeffery, or I’d be knocking at his door for more on the subject).
Bits of Jeffery Zeldman from Don’t design on spec: There are good reasons never to design on spec: It’s a lot of unpaid work. Design is only partly decoration. Mainly it is problem solving. It’s unsafe for agency and potential client alike. If business is slow, especially if you are a freelance web designer/developer, you may be tempted to say yes to unfair requests for free layouts. Designer, beware: the risks outweigh the potential benefits.
From the about:
Jeffrey is the founder and creative director of Happy Cog, an agency of web design and user experience specialists. He publishes the influential A List Apart Magazine, and has written many articles and two books, notably Designing With Web Standards. In 2005, Jeffrey and Eric Meyer co-founded the Event Apart design conference.
EDITED: Jeffrey reposted Don’t design on spec in 2007.
