When we launched the NO!SPEC Campaign I went through my address book and sent off a heads-up to those I felt would appreciate our baby. It was an iffy situation as some might think my enthusiasm spam. Then again, others might not be too happy if I missed them out. Somehow, I neglected to alert Daniel (apologies!) but after a very quick Shame on you!, he’s right here posting with us.
From Daniel’s NO!SPEC Is Good For All Designers:
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past month, like I seem to have been doing, then you’ve probably already heard about the NO!SPEC initiative. I can’t say enough good things about this website and I am surprised that the design community hadn’t thought of it sooner.
By starting out doing spec work to win a project, you are automatically extending your resources beyond your means. I don’t care if you have a nice nest egg left over from that awesome project you finished up for XYZ Big Corporation. The problem is that if you assign your resources to take the time for spec work then they are using up your money on something that is definitely not guaranteed to pay you back in the long run. Plain and simple - you are losing money and there is no guarantee of making it back.
EDIT: Daniel’s article is no longer online.
