Good luck,or should I say, good design!
As you are focusing on web design, you should do well. I would caution anyone leaving a full time job to try to make it as a freelance illustrator working in conventional (or print) media.
There is so much Stock Illustration out there that it has taken a real hit on the assignment work. At least that is what we have found. http://www.richardsalzman.com/

Glad to hear that another designer has made the leap from a comfortable salaried position to the excitement of running his own business – you won’t regret it, no matter what happens! I quit a full-time teaching job three years ago (with no clients in my pocket), and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I’ve learned more from running my own business than I learned in all my other jobs combined!
