I’m a Google Alerts addict. I’m also on the look out for designers taking the leap into running their own businesses, so when David Stiller’s blog came across my google sights with “It’s been nearly a year since I pulled away from an agreeable salaried position to see if I could make it on my own. So far, so good; honestly”, I took a further look into David’s world.
About:
The articles on this blog are ultimately sparked by whatever occurs to me on a day-to-day basis. When writing about Flash and ActionScript in particular, I try to stick with topics that seem to consistently mystify developers who are new to the application.
Interesting posts:
Making Sense of Hexadecimal Color. And if you are in need of a HUGE smile, check out David’s comments about his daughter, Meridian.

Glad to hear that another designer has made the leap from a comfortable salaried position to the excitement of running his own business - you won’t regret it, no matter what happens! I quit a full-time teaching job three years ago (with no clients in my pocket), and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I’ve learned more from running my own business than I learned in all my other jobs combined!

Good luck,or should I say, good design!
As you are focusing on web design, you should do well. I would caution anyone leaving a full time job to try to make it as a freelance illustrator working in conventional (or print) media.
There is so much Stock Illustration out there that it has taken a real hit on the assignment work. At least that is what we have found. http://www.richardsalzman.com/
