Burns Auto Parts: Let your creatives create!

I’m a longtime admirer of Leslie from Burns Auto Parts, even before we set up NO!SPEC. Then, when photographers requested to be added to NO!SPEC’s mission, they suggested contacting Leslie about her articles. Leslie kindly let us use How to Buy Photography (the short course).

This morning Leslie contacted me about an article she’s written in response to the Super Bowl ads.

Applause to Leslie. Some of my best work was done for clients who let me do my job. Clients who listened to the solutions without micro-managing, who mostly kept to the agreed proposal brainstormed from their design brief.

The clients who fiddled until the project lost all sense, who insisted on tagging on ideas from this and that site, who brought in a number of unscheduled people at different stages of the development, ended up with a confusing mishmash of ideas and colour. Sure, as they were given input, their wives, neighbors, secretaries and marketing manager may have loved the end result, but that’s about it. What a waste of time, money and resources.

From Burns Auto Parts on the Super Bowl ads:
I’ll tell why these ads can actually be considered a positive for our industries: they are proof that the client needs to let go of the reins.

Yes, they got some really strong work from these people, but why was it so good?

Because these creators were not hamstrung by the client.

These people, these non-pros, got to be free with their creative processes.

They did’t have to go through round after round of approvals, with some suit telling them they needed more diversity or couldn’t do X because it might not appeal to Y segment of the market or any of the other crap that we pros have to put up with in every single project.
